Before your first visit to Dubrovnik, you should know that steps and stairs are everywhere. Some years ago, a team counted them: there are 4,343 steps in the Old Town and the city wall has 1,080.
As the city is built on a hill, this is not a surprise. The steps and stairs are part of Dubrovnik’s charm and we love them. Want to know a secret to staying young and fit? Our 90-year-old friend climbs 300 steps every day from his home to the Old Town and back!
Steps in holiday accommodation
So be prepared for some daily exercise when you visit Dubrovnik. (And you can reward yourself with a well-deserved ice-cream.) Due to the city’s geography, many properties are spread across two or three levels, with both indoor and outdoor steps.
Dubrovnik is also a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage city, so all buildings are restored according to specific regulations. Because layouts must stay as they are, there are no lifts in properties in the Old Town, even in 5-star hotels.
