Discover the beautiful Elafiti Islands, just 30 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik. Also known as the Elaphiti Islands, this small archipelago is the perfect city escape: crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches and complete tranquillity. An island paradise!
Of the 13 islands, only the 3 main ones are inhabited year round: Koločep (local name Kalamata), Lopud and Šipan. They each have their own distinct character but all share the common feature of the stunning turquoise ocean and a Mediterranean nature.
During Dubrovnik’s republican era, aristocrats would leave the city during the summer heat to enjoy the Elafiti Islands’ more refreshing setting. They built lovely summer houses that you can still discover if you venture onto the islands.
But what are the best ways to get to the Elafiti Islands from Dubrovnik?
Tourist cruises: one day, three islands
Explore all three main islands in one day with the daily cruises offered by several companies, departing from either Dubrovnik Old Town harbour, Lapad or Cavtat. Tours include a stop on each island, plus snorkelling gear and on-board drinks and food.
For a truly special experience, book your cruise on an old-style ‘galleon’ boat. Elite Travel offers this option for about 48 EUR per person; contact them directly for booking and more information.
Kayaking: get up close and personal with nature
A great way for nature lovers to discover the islands is by kayaking. Travelling in a small group, kayaking is perfect for exploring the beautiful coastline and at least one of the islands.
Several companies offer this experience; we recommend Adriatic Kayak Tours (+385 20 312 770).
Private boat: island hop at your own pace
Rent a private boat (with a skipper) for a half or full day to explore the Elafiti Islands in your own time. This may be an expensive option for a couple, but if you’re travelling in a group, it’s really worth it.
Do exactly what you want: discover hidden coves, snorkel in beautiful spots recommended by your skipper, sunbathe on deck – the choice is entirely yours! Whatever you do, you’ll enjoy a truly memorable day.
Passenger ferry: travel like a local
The ferry Postira leaves Gruž harbour for the Elafiti Islands around 3-4 times a day. With this option, you can visit two islands. It’s about 30 minutes to Koločep, 45 minutes to Lopud and 75 minutes to Šipan (Suđurađ port). The ticket is 3 EUR for a single (6 EUR for a return).
